Flying through space
The last quarter Moon that will occur is Friday, September 23rd, at 5:56 a.m.The Moon’s disc will appear 50% illuminated.
In this phase, the Moon is positioned ahead of the Earth, as it moves around the Sun.
Thus, on Friday morning, as you look toward the Moon, you will be looking forward along the Earth’s orbit. The Moon will be 232,684 miles away, and as the Earth travels along its orbit at an average speed of 18.5 miles per second (66,600 miles per hour), the Moon is at the place in space where we will be approximately 3.5 hours later.
Take a look next Friday morning, as you rise for TNP6. It will give you a cool feeling of flying through space. Which is, of course, what we are doing.
